The Food Safety and Criteria Authority of India (FSSAI) announced standards for basmati rice on January 12, 2023, in an effort to advance the basmati rice industry. They'll go into effect on August 1st, 2023.

The FSSAI anticipates that the criteria will safeguard consumer interests and guarantee that the basmati rice supplied in markets has the distinctive scent associated with this kind and is devoid of artificial colouring and fragrances.

The authority has also established guidelines for variables, including the typical grain size and their post-cooking elongation ratio. The maximum levels for moisture, amylose content, uric acid, damaged grains, and the presence of rice other than basmati have all been established.

Brown basmati rice, milled basmati rice, parboiled brown basmati rice, and milled parboiled basmati rice are all covered by the standards.

The regulations, according to a tweet from Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya, "will establish fair practices in the sale of basmati and protect consumer interest."

The Indian subcontinent's Himalayan foothills are where basmati rice is grown. This rice is believed to be special due to its unique agro-climatic conditions and processing methods, including harvesting and ageing. In India, basmati rice can be identified as having been grown in particular regions of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

In India, there are thousands of different types of rice, including basmati. But this aromatic rice has sparked the greatest debate.

After Pakistan objected, India's application for a geographical indication tag recognised in the European Union market was suspended in 2020.
