A ‘society’ is a group formed by several individuals with similar motive, who coordinate and act together for the mutual purpose.

Forming a society in India needs the Society Registration under The Society Registration Act, 1860. This Act was actually implemented in order to promote and execute all-round development of literature, fine arts, science or awareness about any social issue. This article will guide you on the steps and procedures for Society Registration and all other adjacent information.

Purpose of Society Registration

As per the Society Act, 1860, a society can be registered for the following purposes:

  • Promotion of fine arts or performing arts.
  • Provide charitable support
  • Promotion of science and literature
  • Creation of army orphan funds
  • Foundation of the public museum for exhibition
  • Foundation of public reading rooms or libraries
  • Promotion of useful socio-political knowledge
  • Exhibition and collection of natural historical elements
  • Preservation of philosophical inventions, designs, or instruments

Steps for Registering a Society

A minimum of 7 or more individuals can form a society. Society registration is regulated by the state governments. Thus, the application for society registration should be filed at the specific authority of the state.

The important steps for online registration of society are:

  • Selection of Name: Selecting a name for the society is the first and foremost step. According to the Society Act 1860, an identical or similar name of an already registered society won’t be allowed. The name must not suggest a resemblance to any unit of the State Government or Central government.
  • Preparation of Memorandum of Association: The Memorandum of Association of the society along with Rules & Regulations of society should be signed by every member, witnessed by any Gazetted Officer with their official stamping and complete address. The memorandum must contain the name of the society, the object of the society.

Documents Required for Registering a Society

1. PAN Card of all the members of the proposed society.

2. The Residence Proof of all the members of society.

  • Bank Statement
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Electricity Bill
  • Driving License
  • Passport

3. Memorandum of Association with all the required information.

4. Rules & Regulations of the Society should be duly mentioned.

5. covering letter mentioning the objective.

6. A proof of address of the registered office of the society.

7. A list of all the members of the governing body and their signatures.

8. A declaration has to be given by the president of the proposed society.
